Abruzzo: Ancient Fishing Machine, National Park and Traditions

Our journey will start from the “Costa dei Trabocchi” where stony beaches and rocky coast mix, to discover old fishing machine hanging from wooden pier. We move on to the countryside to explore on foot Majella Nation Park… Abruzzo is the real green heart of the Mediterranean! Among woods, forests and caves we will visit many ancient churches and hermitages, witnesses of the importance of these region for Christian spirituality. Abruzzo is full of little beautiful villages too. We will visit Castel del Monte and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, the most famous with the outstanding Calascio Fortress. To understand in the best way the complexity of Abruzzo, our trip will also focus to food and wine tradition: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, “arrosticini”, sheep cheese are just some of the delicious wines and typical yummy that we will taste.

After, we visit the Roman Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere and its unbelievable sight to the Golfo di Venere, which make it one of the most beautiful and visited locations of Abruzzo. We’ll conclude with a fish-based dinner inside a spectacular “Trabocco” at pile over the sea, held up in one of the most attractive tracts of the Adriatic coast, a really unique location for an unforgettable experience!

4th Day
We are moving to the Trail of the Spirit of Majella National Park, to reach the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio. This is surely one of the most attractive religious locations of the whole National Park: it is difficult to understand where the cave finishes and the hermitage begins. Here, there is a chapel and two spaces obtained in the rock and destined to the hermits, but the access among four stairs derived from rocks is still more suggestive. We will keep going to Scalelle trail in Orfento Valley.

Return to Fonte Vetica and here, in front of the hot “fornacelle” (kind of barbecue) we familiarize with the cooking of the famous “arrosticini”, a must of Abruzzo cooking tradition. The Vegetarian people will have the possibility of tasting cheeses or grilled vegetables. After lunch, we go to Calascio and reach on foot its fortress. We’ll move to Santo Stefano di Sessanio, small village saved by deterioration and the depopulation. We’ll walk among the streets of the most authentic and well conserved Mediceo village.
